FRIDAY, April 15: Sam Mooney. Alexis Grace. Scottie Spiegelman
SAM MOONEY is a singer/songwriter from Brookhaven, Mississippi. Mooney’s musical heritage is of blues, rock, soul, and country. He blends this musical pedigree with modern influences of pop. This sound was showcased when Mooney’s original song “The Love You Never Knew” won the Performing Songwriter Competition at Berklee College of Music while he attended their Five-Week Summer Program in 2013.
In Mooney’s first major talent competition, the 2013 Mid-South Fair Youth Talent Competition, he won the entire contest, which is hailed as the largest amateur youth talent contest in the world, by beating out a field of over 250 contestants chosen from across an eight state region.
In the spring of 2014, Mooney recorded his debut EP, Somewhere in Between, at BlueSky Studios in Jackson, Mississippi with producer Casey Combest. The EP is a diverse collection of originals written by Mooney, ranging from blues to rock to pop.
Mooney spent the summer of 2015 on the road with a twenty-five date tour in the southeast. The tour hit many of the region’s premiere venues and festivals. The tour was highlighted by several over-capacity headlining shows at Hard Rock Memphis, Brookstock Music Festival, and the famous Hal & Mal’s in Jackson, MS among other venues.
Mooney also hosts the Mississippi Music Hour on Rebel Radio in Oxford, MS. As of Spring 2016, Mooney is currently preparing to release his second EP.
ALEXIS GRACE the artist might surprise you if you’re expecting Alexis Grace, the American Idol alumna. Yes, she wowed the judges on season eight of the long-running reality pop stardom series with her big, soulful voice. But if you’re expecting Alexis Grace the American Idol alumna, you might be expecting a one-note – and Alexis Grace the artist sings and studies them all.
The daughter of a Beale Street musician, Alexis studied the masters of soul and R&B – Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Whitney Houston – in her childhood home. Her formal music education continued at the University of Memphis. From jazz to opera, Alexis has allowed her myriad influences to deeply inform her development as an artist.
Since her spin around the reality TV track on Idol, Alexis has used her positive attitude and fierce determination to continue to propel her career as an entertainer. She currently co-hosts the No. 1 rated mid-day Top 40 radio show in Memphis on Q107.5 WHBQ-FM.
And Alexis hasn’t forgotten her love of the stage, either – she recently dedicated 10 weeks to the role of Roxie Hart in TheatreMemphis’ production of Chicago, earning nightly standing ovations, rave reviews and sold-out houses throughout the run. She also performed in Legally Blonde, and was a cast member of American Idiot this year
